Types of Necklace Clasps
Necklace clasps are used to close, open, and secure necklaces around the neck. Clasps come in a variety of materials like gold, silver, and plated metal. Jewelers can even fashion special clasps from gemstones like pearls to blend in with a gemstone necklace.
Barrel, lobster claw, and spring ring are popular necklace clasps. Barrel clasps are secure clasps that consist of a square-shaped wire that locks into a barrel-shaped tube. The lobster claw clasp resembles a lobster claw and suits all types of necklaces. It contains a spring inside and hooks to a circle or tube at the opposite end of the chain.
The spring ring is a convenient, round clasp that opens with a coil spring. Since magnetic clasps are easy to secure, they are also very popular. However, magnetic clasps have a weight restriction, as their magnetism may be unable to hold heavy necklaces.
The simple s-hook and eye style of clasp is popular for its ease of wear. Since they can be easily unhooked, however, they are best suited for lightweight necklaces. The classic box clasp is available with different loops and is the favored choice for multi-loop necklaces. Clamshells, crimps, and spacer bars are other necklace clasps work well with beaded necklaces.
