Lockets

A locket is a form of personalized jewelry, consisting of a small metal case inside which a small photograph, lock of hair, or any other personal remembrance can rest. While lockets are generally hung on a chain around the neck, they can also be worn alone or around a bracelet on the wrist.

Made from silver and gold, lockets may be encrusted with onyx, diamonds, and other gemstones. Lockets are reminiscent of a Victorian sentimentality, when people often incorporated pictures or memorabilia of loved ones in jewelry and other decorative items. Available in varied sizes and popular shapes like heart, oval, square, round, envelope, and book, lockets can be personalized to suit anyone’s individual style.

Jewelers can also engrave lockets with a monogram in the front and a personal message at the back. Though the nineteenth century use for lockets was centered on the mourning of a loved one, modern day lockets are appropriate for any occasion. Some lockets contain large pullout sections capable of holding several photographs.
