Imitation Pearls

Pearls carrying the names faux, artificial, simulated and man-made are all types of imitation pearls. Though often beautiful to behold, these synthetically fabricated pearls do not have real financial value. In certain cases, jewelers sell these pearls under regional names like Mallorca and Laguna.

Imitation pearls are comprised of plastic, ceramic and even glass materials. Manufacturers apply a special type of varnish and other coatings to the surfaces of these pearls to give them a glossy look and pearl-like appearance. Sold largely and successfully, Roman pearls and indestructible pearls are the two most popular imitations.

You can distinguish an imitation pearl from a genuine pearl by scraping it gently across your teeth. Owing to their crystalline structure, real pearls will feel a little coarse on your teeth, while the imitation pearls are very smooth. You can also detect an imitation pearl by its gravity and reflective properties.

Imitation pearls, like natural pearls must be thoroughly cared for. You must clean them regularly and store them properly in dry places. The occasional restringing of your pearls is also a good practice, as it will prevent your strand from breaking.
