Treated Diamonds

Treated diamonds are those gemstones that undergo special modifications, making them fit for trade in the jewelry market. Without these modifications, these particular diamonds are usually unfit for use in jewelry.

Though considered taboo by some, treated diamonds can offer many consumers an economic alternative to untreated, natural stones.

Common treatments to diamonds include laser drilling to remove inclusions, application of sealants to fill cracks and special color processes to modify gem hue. Jewelers are required to disclose most of these treatments to the consumer. When purchasing a diamond, it is important to ask your jeweler if it has undergone treatment. Any treatment may affect the manner in which you can clean and display the diamond.

If you purchase a filled diamond, make sure that the jeweler has not used bromide in the treatment. When exposed to sunlight and other UV rays, bromide will cause the diamond to cloud over, greatly affecting clarity and luster.

With the proper precautions taken and questions asked, you should have no problem choosing a treated diamond that fits both your wallet and personal taste.
