Diamond 4 C’s

While there are many important things to consider when purchasing a diamond, the 4 C’s – cut, color, carat and clarity – are the most vital factors determining a gem’s worth. Developed and implemented by the Gemological Institute of America, the 4 C’s are a universal method of diamond classification, consulted and trusted by diamond purveyors worldwide.

The cut of a diamond refers to the manner in which a jeweler transforms the gem from its original state into its final shape. How a diamond is cut is largely based upon the original stone itself.

The color of a diamond, ranging from clear or “white” in hue to a deep, dramatic pink or blue, also plays an important role in diamond worth.

Carat refers to the weight of the diamond. A slight increase in carat weight can mean a dramatic increase in gem price.

A lack of clarity in a diamond can mean a dramatic drop in value, as the gemstone’s ability to refract light, or “luster” is one of its most attractive selling points.
