Diamond Grading
Shopping for a diamond can be a costly affair. A diamond is an investment, emotionally and financially. It is extremely important, therefore, that any diamond you consider is officially graded and certified.
Gemologists grade diamonds according to the 4 Cs – cut, clarity, color and carat – though there are other factors that influence both the value and physical properties of these gemstones. A diamond’s shape, cleanliness, history and particular gemological association certification will also affect its total value.
A certified gemological laboratory should examine any diamond you consider purchasing. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is the most reputable, diamond grading source among gemologists. There are other labs also certified in diamond grading, though a certification from them may not be valued as highly as one received from the GIA.
It is essential, therefore, for you to consider the reputation of the laboratory when looking to have your diamond graded.
It is also important to consider the future of your diamond. If your diamond jewelry holds greater sentimental than financial value to you or your loved one, a high-quality diamond grading may be of diminished importance to you. If you are considering posterity or future market value, however, it is important to have your diamond properly graded.
