Diamond Cut

Though nature decides the color, clarity and carat of a diamond, the manner in which the gem is cut depends entirely upon a jeweler. A beautiful cut can often make the difference between an average and an outstanding diamond.

The “cut” of a diamond refers to the process in which a jeweler shapes a diamond, from the rough-mined stone to the finished product. A skilled jeweler will cut a diamond so that it refracts the most light when one views the gem from above.

The round brilliant cut, developed in 1919 by gem connoisseur Marcel Tolkowsky, is currently the most popular and effective method of diamond cutting. With a total of 57 sides, referred to as “facets” in the gem world, this cut allows for ideal light diffusion and luster.

When purchasing a diamond, pay special attention to how the gem is cut. Many jewelers will poorly cut a diamond just to keep extra carat weight. Though a 1-carat diamond may sound more appealing and valuable, a poor cut will keep the gem’s value and luster low.

You should remember not to confuse a diamond’s cut with its shape. While choosing the right shape for your taste is important, the manner in which a jeweler has cut the diamond will determine your total cost.
