Pearl
Pearl is the birthstone for the month of June.
The pearl is the product of an oyster's defense mechanism. When a piece of sand or other irritant penetrates the interior of an oyster, either by man or naturally, the oyster immediately coats the irritant with a lustrous substance, called nacre. As layer upon layer of nacre surrounds the irritant, a pearl is formed.
Pearls are available in a wide range of colors from white, pink, lavender and black. They should be relatively free of surface blemishes. A pearl with a high luster will reflect the light beautifully and can increase the value of the pearl.
Pearls are known to absorb their color overtones from the beauty of the natural world that surrounds them. The silvery light of the moon, the golden rays of the sun and the deep blue of the ocean can all be seen in the glowing color of a pearl.
Pearls are known as a symbol of modesty, chastity and purity. The presence of white pearls during a wedding ceremony symbolizes the stability and affection of the couple and is believed to symbolize a happy marriage.
Believed by many to harness the powers of night, black pearls are a stunning alternative to the white pearl. Some cultures used black pearls in magical spells and to aid them in foreseeing the future. Asian emperors and empresses have been known to wear black pearls as symbols of their dominance.
Regardless of your skin tone, there is a pearl that best matches your color whether light, fair, olive, or dark, making this birthstone a perfect complement to any baby born in June.
