Garnet

Garnet is the most commonly associated birthstone for the month of January.

The first image that comes to mind when people think of garnet, are the dark red garnets set in gold rings and necklaces that were popular in Victorian times. Garnets are not only found in the deep red that has made them famous; garnets are found in every color except blue, including brilliant green, raspberry pink and orange which means that January babies have plenty of choices!

There are many ancient beliefs and legends about garnets. Garnet was said to give its wearer guidance in the night allowing the wearer to see what others could not. According to the Egyptians, garnet is an antidote for snakebite and food poisoning. Garnet is also believed to protect its wearer from nightmares, prevent hearing loss and depression and promote long-lasting love.

According to legend, Noah hung a large garnet in the ark for illumination. Some Hebrew literature lists garnet as one of the 12 gems in Aaron’s breastplate. Christian tradition has long considered the blood-red garnet a symbol of Christ's sacrifice. The Koran believes that the garnet illuminates the Fourth Heaven of the Moslems.

Today as in ages past, garnet is given as a symbol of consistency, perseverance and good health. Protecting your garnet from scratches, hard knocks and extreme temperatures will ensure your garnet gives you years of pleasure.
