Jewelry Appraisals

Jewelry appraisal is very important for insurance and estate evaluation purposes, as well as for the identification of lost and found property. Only certified gemologist appraisers, approved by the American Gem Society, are qualified to perform appraisals.

The process requires skilled craftsmen who have experience in handling jewels. Appraisers use a series of laboratory tests to assess the quality of your jewelry, including examination under a microscope. After making an appointment, the appraiser will perform the evaluation in your presence to assure honesty and accuracy. Some appraisers also have portable machines and can visit your house to carry out the appraisal.

The value of the appraised jewelry is based on the current market prices for gemstones and precious metals. The appraisers charge a flat fee per item. Gemstones like diamonds can remain in their mountings during evaluation, graded according to the 4 Cs.

Appraisal can be done for owners, banks and lending institutions, mortgage companies and others. If you are planning to buy expensive diamond jewelry, make sure to get it appraised first.
