Celtic Cross Pendants

The Celtic cross is basically an encircled, Christian cross. While varied interpretations exist for the circle surrounding the Celtic cross, the exquisite Celtic cross is not only the most recognized piece of Celtic jewelry, other than the Claddagh ring, but it is gaining popularity as both a religious symbol and fashion accessory pendant.

Celtic crosses basically evolved from two Christian symbols, the Chi-Rho, a monogram of the first two letters of the word “Christ” in Greek, and the linear or the Roman execution cross. Celtic cross pendants are easily identifiable because of the circle that surrounds the cross, a Celtic symbol of eternity.

Celtic cross pendants are available in a wide variety of intricate designs of interlocked knot work, spirals, key patterns, animal and foliage motifs, and Biblical stories. Created from sterling silver or gold, in varying sizes, some Celtic crosses have precious stones like garnets, amethysts, and emeralds embedded in them. The Colum Cille Pectoral and Trinity cross are other well known Celtic cross pendants.
