Retro Jewelry

Retro jewelry dates back to the period spanning between 1935 and 1950, when war shook Europe and America, and women joined the workforce. While women’s work wear was somber, jewelry was in stark contrast, created in feminine motifs with delicate effects.

Big, bold, and whimsical jewelry designs were the hallmarks of the retro era. Jewelers relied upon gold during this period, as platinum was unavailable, owing to its use in war efforts. Varied gold colors like yellow gold, rose gold, and green gold were popular, blended in striking combinations.

Jewelers gave large proportions and rectangular cuts to gemstones like citrine and aquamarine. They jazzed up traditional Christian cross designs with sharp cuts, intricate embellishments, and precious stones. Synthetic rubies, sapphires, and other colored gemstones were much sought-after in jewelry design. Cocktail rings, oversized bracelets, rings and watches were especially popular jewelry items during the retro period.

Modern fashion looks to the retro period liberally and constantly for inspiration – there is no feeling like owning a piece of unique jewelry from a period that is so often admired and copied by the generations that followed it.
