Edwardian Jewelry
The Edwardian period was a short period, spanning from 1901 to 1915. King Edward’s beautiful Danish wife Alexandria brought a cosmopolitan influence to this jewelry. This jewelry was exuberant and whimsical, famous for a lightness of design.
Artists designed this jewelry to look like lace, using diamond and platinum to create jewelry with intricate filigree patterns. Diamonds and pearls were an essential element of Edwardian jewelry design. The dog collar or choker necklace that Alexandria wore was popularized during the Edwardian era. Hair jewels like tiaras were a highlight during this period, as well as dangling earrings.
King Edward’s love for sports was reflected in brooches [Antique Brooches], pendants, and rings that displayed sporting motifs. The “negligee” pendant, comprising two unequal length drops secured to a single stone or a thin chain, was a popular creation of this era. Another popular jewelry item was the “sautior”, a long pearl necklace or thin chain ending in a tassel.
Delicate and intricate, evoking a time devoted to great craftsmanship, Edwardian jewelry is a beautiful addition to any antique lover’s jewelry collection.
