Art Deco Jewelry
The art deco period existed between 1920-1935 and produced jewelry that was completely different from that of the previous decades. A reflection of future-forward thinking, Art deco design departed from the romantic embellishment and curves of the previous decade, adopting a love of bold, geometric design.
The technological and social advancements made during the period were often reflected in the jewelry designs and styles. A reflection of their social and political emancipation, women offset their new, shorter hairstyles with dramatic, long earrings. More androgynous, drop-waist dresses were accentuated with elaborate ropes of diamond, sapphire, ruby and pearl necklaces.
Egyptian motifs like the falcon and Sphinx were popular jewelry embellishments. Diamond watches, pearls, cocktail rings, and beads were fashionable items for the women of this period.
Bold, geometric designs were best displayed in rings, watches, and pendants of the time – sharp angles and lines contrasted with rows of gemstones, platinum, and silver. Jewelry from the art deco period represents a time of freedom, fun and focus on the future.
